When a garment factory loses power, the owner loses money. But when a hospital loses power, doctors lose lives.
Inside an Operation Theatre (OT) or an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), machines like ventilators and life-support monitors must run every single second. A sudden city grid blackout is extremely dangerous for sick patients. Because the risk is so high, hospitals cannot buy just any normal generator. They must follow strict international safety rules for emergency power.
If you are building a new clinic or hospital in Bangladesh, here are the core backup power standards you must follow to keep your patients safe.
1. The 10-Second Rule
The most important rule for hospital power is time. When the city electricity drops out, the hospital cannot wait in the dark.
Strict safety rules say that emergency backup power must turn on and carry the life-saving machines in exactly 10 seconds or less. You cannot wait for a worker to run outside and start the engine with a key.
To hit this 10-second rule, the hospital must install a high-quality Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). The ATS panel watches the city power. The exact second the grid fails, the ATS instantly starts the heavy diesel engine and moves the power over safely.
2. A Backup for the Backup (Twin Engines)
What happens if the main backup generator breaks down during a huge storm? A hospital can never say, “We have no power.”
Big hospitals follow a rule called “N+1 Redundancy.” In simple words, this means they always have an extra machine ready. Instead of buying one massive engine, smart hospitals buy two or three slightly smaller engines.
They connect these engines using a Synchronization Panel. If one engine suddenly stops working, the panel instantly turns the second engine on to take over the load. The OT lights never go out.
3. Safe Fuel Storage Rules
During massive monsoon floods or heavy cyclones in Bangladesh, the city grid can stay broken for many days. Fuel delivery trucks might not be able to reach your hospital.
Hospital standards say you must keep enough pure diesel fuel right on your property to run the generator at full speed for at least 24 to 48 hours non-stop.
- The fuel tanks must be built with double metal walls so they never leak into the ground.
- The fuel must be cleaned often so water drops do not rust the engine during an emergency.
4. Strict Weekly Load Testing
A hospital generator is useless if it fails to start on the day of a big blackout. You cannot just hope the machine will work. You must prove it.
Rules state that hospital maintenance teams must test the emergency generator every single week. But they cannot just turn it on empty. They must run the engine for 30 minutes while it carries a heavy electrical load. This burns off wetness inside the engine and proves the battery is strong enough to save lives.
Normal Factory vs. Hospital Power
Here is a quick look at why hospital power setups are totally different from standard factory setups.
| Feature | Standard Factory Generator | Hospital Emergency Generator |
| Start Time Limit | 1 to 5 minutes | Must start in 10 seconds flat |
| Machine Setup | Usually one single big engine | Twin engines linked together |
| Fuel Storage | 8 to 12 hours | 24 to 48 hours minimum |
| Testing Rule | Turn on when remembered | Strict weekly test under heavy load |
